How to get the most out of Minecraft Fabric API and its mods

Fabric is a powerful modding tool that lets you peek under the hood of Minecraft and its mods. It requires Fabric Loader, Fabric API, and Minecraft Java version. Carefully read the installation instructions to avoid making a mess out of your Minecraft profile.

What’s inside Minecraft Fabric?

Fabric consists of these modules:

  • Yarn, a code editor
  • Intermediary, a compatibility tool for different Minecraft versions
  • Loom, a build system
  • Fabric Loader, core compatibility library for mods
  • various smaller tools

Used together, Fabric modules allow you to create, open, edit, and tinker with mods’ and Minecraft’s code. You will need to have a Java Development Kit or Visual Studio Code installed to edit the code.

What is Fabric API?

Fabric API is a tool that lets Minecraft mods interact with one another and Minecraft. It is a must-have to properly use Fabric mods.

Where to download the Fabric installer?

Simply click at the DOWNLOAD button at the bottom of this article.

After downloading, click "Install" then you will be prompted to download Fabric API and put it in the "mods" folder. Create a new profile and do so.

For detailed installation instructions, visit the Fabric Wiki. For detailed installation instructions in other environments, visit the Fabric MC guide page.

What are the best Minecraft Fabric mods?

The full list can be found here. With few exceptions, all of these are compatible with Forge as well. Check which Minecraft versions are supported in the mod description. The 25 best Fabric mods, in no particular order, are:

#1 Mouse Tweaks

Turbo-charges your mouse clicks, replacing the default inventory management actions. Let’s you quickly move, craft, split, and transfer items across inventories using the mouse. Open and edit the .CFG file to tweak each action. Compatible with all mods based on GuiContainer but may conflict with mods that change the mouse wheel behavior.

#2 CraftTweaker

Add custom trees, blocks, recipes, tooltips, and much more. Made in a custom scripting language, ZenScript, that uses plaintext files. These files have the .ZS file extension and should be edited with an advanced text editor, such as Notepad++.

#3 AppleSkin

HUD-enhancing mod that provides information on hunger, which is normally invisible. If food is held while this mod is active, the drumstick meter will show how much hunger it will restore. Hearts restored will also be highlighted. The mod’s textures are in the .PNG file format and can be easily replaced or customized. A Spigot or Bukkit plugin can make this mod work on vanilla servers.

#4 Bookshelf

A modder’s dream mod. It is a library of common features that serves as a code base for other mods. Some of these features are new recipe, ingredient, and loot condition types.

#5 Controlling

Search for and edit key binds. Shows key bind conflicts and which keys are available to be assigned.

#6 Applied Energistics 2

Adds a new ore, Quartz, and a new resource to the game, Energy. There are new decorative blocks too, such as Quartz Glass. Energy is transmitted through cables, which can be hidden behind a facade. Allows for making automation machines that use processors. Fully supports Forge Multipart.

#7 Clumps

Makes XP orbs clump together to reduce lag. Reduces the time needed to absorb the orbs as well to prevent them from clogging the screen.

#8 FoamFix

Reduces Java heap memory usage by as much as 50%, resulting in lower RAM usage. Optimizes network loading as well. Gives the best results on modded Minecraft and on large multiplayer servers; use a dedicated solution for a vanilla server.

#9 Reborn Core

Used as a core library for other Reborn mods, such as Tech Reborn and Fluxed Redstone. Not compatible with Forge.

#10 WTHIT

What The Hell Is That adds an in-game tooltip about the block the player is looking at. Provides an API for other mods to latch on to and add their own tooltips. The toggle for showing/hiding the tooltips is Numpad 1. Install it on a server to access more advanced features.

#11 Nature’s Compass

A utility mod that enhances the compass with biome tracking. Open the in-game GUI and select the biome you want to find. You will get an overlay showing the location and distance from that biome. All registered biomes, vanilla and modded, are supported. Change the maximum search distance in the config file. Install an older Forge version if the most recent one doesn’t support this mod.

#12 Enchantment Descriptions

Shows the description of enchantments on the book’s tooltip. Supports 13 languages and most modded enchantments as well.

#13 Xaero’s Minimap

Adds an MMORPG-style radar minimap to the screen, showing nearby mobs, villagers, items, and critters. Uses blocky graphics to retain the look and feel of Minecraft. Works in caves as well. Lets you add waypoints and teleport to them. On each death, creates a waypoint you can visit right away to retrieve your items. Has loads of customization options (press Y in-game to access).

#14 AttributeFix

Fixes many mods that rely on changing attributes, which are values attached to skills, items, and other objects in Minecraft. AttributeFix raises the cap on those values, such as Follow Range, Attack Speed, and Armor.

#15 Better Foliage

A cosmetic, client-only mod that improves block and vegetation appearance, grass in particular. Compatible with other cosmetic mods, such as Shaders Mod. Turn off the native connected grass if grass textures or blocks start showing up broken.

#16 WorldEdit

An in-game Minecraft map editor with powerful tools and features. Use math equations to generate or brush tools to terraform large swaths of land. Provides in-game help for commands. Parts of the world can be saved as separate files and shared.

#17 SimpleHarvest

Simplifies harvesting by turning it into a right-click action. Configurable via a JSON file. Works only on crops that have their seeds in the game’s drop list. Define new seeds by using the harvest:seeds item tag. Not required on the client, though it will remove the player’s arm animation after harvest.

#18 Antique Atlas

A special, craftable map. Features click&drag navigation, zooming and adding markers. The entire map can be exported to an image file. Custom texture packs can be added as well. Crafting two used Atlases together will merge their contents.

#19 GeckoLib

Kinetic animation engine that allows defining custom particle and sound keyframes. Watching the tutorials and reading the wiki is highly recommended.

#20 Light Overlay

Client-only overlay, activated by pressing F7. Shows whether mobs can spawn in that spot — yellow crosses mean the mob can spawn at night, while red crosses mean they can spawn at any time. Turn on the number display mode if running a mod that uses shaders.

#21 MineTogether

Boosts the multiplayer experience with numerous features, such as server invites and global chat. Cloud saves and oAuth services are supported as well. If you include this mod in your mod pack and are a CreeperHost partner, you can monetize your mod pack through MineTogether.

#22 FindMe

Allows for quick searching for nearby items in inventories. Hover over an item, press Y and the mod will spawn cloud particles in all nearby inventories that have that item. The particles are visible through the walls. Range is configurable in the config file. Both client and server must use this mod for it to work.

#23 VoxelMap

A minimap and world map mod that shows the entire explored world in all its splendor. Includes features such as nether mapping, waypoint teleportation, and mob icons. Supports many languages. Can output images for further use.

#24 MmmMmmMmmMmm (TargetDummy)

Adds a Target Dummy to the game. Useful for testing out your weapons. Can be dressed up, equipped with armor, smacked around, or just plain ignored. Allows for rotation in 16 different directions. Various armor pieces will change its appearance. Shearing the dummy will change its skin.

#25 Charm

A vanilla mod designed to boost the gameplay experience without compromising the game. Adds new villager types and Coral Squids. The Totem of Preserving will save your items if you die. New bookcases hold up to 18 books apiece.

Conclusion

Fabric is a great way to enrich your Minecraft experience while learning to code. Keep neatness in mind and weave your own Fabric Minecraft world.
